We start to trade in symbols and codes and embark upon a life of encoding and decoding, transmitting and receiving, seeing and being seen. Still, we will never grasp but a fraction of the data gushing across the world. Here, these artificial landscapes are flown as flags of contested territories. The contention of mental landscapes, interpretations and ideas is an affliction of our polarised era. In ideological warfare our mind is the frontline. In the widest sense, interpreting sensory stimuli is automatically creating recognisable scapes from abstract ones. &nbsp; &nbsp; Artists are always shaping the environment, making new scapes, new vistas and ideas. Scape is related to the Old Norse ‘skapa,’ which means to create, and it has survived in that form in the modern Nordic languages. In ‘Rescaping,’ artists from all over Europe–Iceland, Denmark, Finland, Italy and Cyprus–recreate their surroundings in various ways and examine the multitude of scapes that make up our world. &nbsp; &nbsp; ‘Rescaping’ is in part a continuation of ‘Scaping,’ an exhibition that took place in Leipzig last autumn. All these dissonant (disvisant?) images form an ocean of noise, engulfing us, trapping us, soothing us. The eye motif is based on a painting by my late aunt Gía, an artist suffering from schizophrenia. The loft (in an old textile factory, much like Spinnerei) went by the name Bread Factory and had done so for years, long before I moved in there. Along with my roommates Gregory Burton and Reuben Ward we shot scenes from our daily lives in the loft and around our neighbourhood. This was a transformative time for all of us, and my memories from those days have a strong intensity to them. Here, they are framed as ‘magic’ animated slides, evoking both the joyful familial memories associated with the outdated slide format and the hazy melancholy which always haunts a bygone era. It is a fragmented portrait of a time and a place. LIA in Spinnerei, Leipzig. September 2021. Persisting Mnemonic Disorder is an installation with two slide projectors in which the lamps have been replaced by stroboscopic lights. A found image of a woman taking a photo is flashing out of sync with the very end of a color reversal film. The sprocket holes are prominent. The flashing lights, reminiscent of a camera flash or cinematic flashbacks, create drifting, hypnotic rhythms.
